How to Merge Multiple Files into One PDF

Combining several different files into a single multipage PDF document is a common need for many users. Creating a multipage PDF from various files is simple with DocuFreezer. Notably, the source files can be in various formats, not only PDF. Follow the steps below to merge multiple files into one PDF.

Step-by-step guide to merging files

Launch DocuFreezer

1. Launch DocuFreezer. Open the DocuFreezer application on your computer. Ensure you have the latest version installed to access all features.

Add files to DocuFreezer

2. Add files to DocuFreezer. First, add the files you want to merge. You can either click the "Add Files" icon in the top left corner and then browse for files or simply drag the files into the white area. DocuFreezer supports a wide range of file formats that you can merge into PDF.

Select output format

3. Select output format and merge option. Once your files are added:

  • Choose Output file type: Select PDF as the output format from the dropdown menu.
  • Click the Settings button and enable Multipage: Merge into one PDF option. This will combine your added files into a single PDF document.
Set the output filename

4. (Optional) Set the output filename. By default, DocuFreezer names the combined file as "Combined.pdf". To customize the filename, enter your desired filename next to Combined file instead of "Combined.pdf".

Click the Start button

5. Click the Start button to start batch conversion. DocuFreezer will begin merging your files into a single multi-page PDF. It usually only takes a few seconds, but might take longer depending on the number of files.

Check the output file

6. Check the output file. Once the process is complete, navigate to the output folder to find your merged PDF document. Open the file to ensure all your content is included as expected.

Instead of PDF, you can create a multipage TIFF. Just follow the same steps but select TIFF as output format and Multipage:Merge to one TIFF. Using the TIFF format might be useful in government filing and other scenarios.

Advanced settings and quick tips for merging files

How to append new files as pages to the same document over time

For instance, you have a PDF document in a specific location that you want to update from time to time (during different DocuFreezer sessions). You can choose what DocuFreezer should do in this case. If a file with the same name already exists in your chosen output destination, there are different options:

  • Create new file
  • Overwrite

  1. Go to Settings Advanced;
  2. Find the setting If combined file already exists (start typing "if combined" in the search bar);
  3. Select the desired option from the dropdown list;

DocuFreezer vs free online services

At first glance, DocuFreezer's functionality is not unique. Many free online services can help you convert, merge, and manage various documents, including PDFs. However, developers of those services often put various limitations and/or too aggressively monetize them. For example, they might require a "premium subscription" to process more than a certain number of files or display many advertisements in the interface.

DocuFreezer, in contrast, allows for unlimited conversions per session and it works entirely offline, never exposing your sensitive data to the outside world. When you decide to purchase DocuFreezer, it’s only a one-time payment.

DocuFreezer is a great addition to your printer and scanner software

If you’ve ever scanned documents before, you probably know that not all manufacturer software allows you to combine the scanned pages into a single PDF file. Oftentimes, the pages come out as separate documents, making them harder to handle. You might also know the frustration of requesting a scan of a document, only to receive a bunch of photos taken on a smartphone. However, there is a simple and intuitive way to merge those separate pages into a single multi-page PDF.

The default printing and scanner software built into Windows is very basic, providing only the most essential functionality. The software that comes with your printer or scanner (like HP, Canon, Brother, etc.) often doesn’t provide all the functionality you might need. For example, it might only create multi-page PDFs from documents scanned through a feeder scanner, while images from a flatbed scanner can only be saved as separate files.

Therefore, DocuFreezer might be useful for people who use printers and scanners often, adding the functionality that is missing.
